Time for a brief business update. I am 60 years old. Nothing in my long career has prepared me for the current state of affairs in retail–or the world in general, for that matter. Yes, the shop has reopened to in-store shopping and we are still filling orders for curbside pick-up. But without our birthday parties and walk in crafts, the shop feels like a shadow of what it was. And then today, I got the news that my largest supplier will be closing. Many supplies we use for our craft projects will become unavailable by the fall. So lots of questions, not much certainty. Like everything these days, yes?
I would be remiss not to mention George Floyd and the activism since his death. There are so many pieces written about him and his death; I have been reading and absorbing all kinds of commentary, for days. I am starting to believe there is hope for real change. My undoing came when viewing that horrible video. I broke down and sobbed for a long time. The graffiti that reads “all mothers were summoned when he called out for his mama” is so true. It pierced my mother heart.
Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy summer!
